Where will I stay during a safari in Tanzania?

Your accommodations during a Tanzania safari can create lasting memories. There are various options available, and we hope this information will help you make an informed choice.

  1. Hotels & Lodges
These are straightforward options – permanent structures with solid walls! Hotels and lodges offer full-service facilities, including private rooms or cottages, private bathrooms, restaurants, and lounges. Some even have swimming pools. Many lodges are beautifully designed using local materials, reflecting the surrounding environment and local culture. Hotels and lodges are available both inside and outside the National Parks, with options ranging from budget-friendly to ultra-luxurious.

For many safari-goers, one of the highlights of the experience is the opportunity to sleep under canvas. There are two distinct options for this:

2.Tented Camps

These are permanent or semi-permanent camps, usually located in areas with excellent game viewing. The camps offer many of the comforts of a lodge, but within spacious private canvas tents. These tents are typically set up on solid bases and feature beds, private bathrooms, and high-quality meals served in a designated dining tent. The charm of these camps and ‘safari tents’ is the opportunity to sleep under canvas in the wilderness, while still enjoying a high level of comfort.

The camps are not fenced, so wild animals may wander through, occasionally grazing nearby. There are always guards present to escort guests to and from their tents after dark, and as far as we know, animals haven’t figured out how to unzip heavy canvas tents! While it may be a bit thrilling (and heart-pounding) to hear a giraffe munching on an acacia tree, lions roaring, or zebras grazing near your tent, it’s an exhilarating experience that truly enhances your safari adventure.

Tented camps in Tanzania safaris fall into two main categories:

  • Permanent Tented Camps: These camps have tents that stay in the same location throughout the year. They often feature raised decks, outdoor dining areas, and occasionally a swimming pool. Permanent tented camps vary from rustic to ultra-luxury, so you can easily find one that suits your preferences and budget.

  • Mobile/Semi-permanent Tented Camps: Typically found in the Serengeti, these camps move depending on factors like the Great Migration. For example, a mobile camp might be located in the Northern Serengeti from June to November, and then move to the Southern Serengeti or Ndutu from December to April, following the migration to provide the best wildlife viewing opportunities.

The facilities and comfort level at tented camps generally depend on the accommodation provider rather than whether the camp is permanent or mobile. The amenities and pricing for tented camps can vary widely, so it’s a good idea to discuss your preferences and budget with your Lion King Safari Planner.

Your Safari Planner can help you craft an itinerary with similar accommodations or mix and match different types to suit your needs.

3. Basic Camping Safaris (Tents on the Ground)

On a basic camping safari, guests stay in small private tents at designated campsites located in or near National Parks. You will sleep in a sleeping bag on a roll-up mattress. Our safari crew sets up the camp each evening and prepares all meals. The campsite facilities are basic, including shared washrooms and showers.
